Strolling around Ensenada’s landmarks

3 minute read

In the afternoon, a walk on #Ensenada main street, famous for its shopping

Ensenada is a safe, quiet city perfect for strolling around, with a hint of a marine spirit. Enjoy your walk!

Ensenada is a perfect city to spend a few days on the beach, but it is also a small city worth discovering. We suggest a leisurely walk to explore the real Ensenada.

Art, history and margaritas in #Ensenada

Start your walk at the former city casino, today the Centro Social, Cívico y Cultural Riviera de Ensenada. Go to the small city museum, then to the patio – on cruise days and vacation time there is an interesting crafts market – and, if it’s that time of the day, sip your first margarita at the gorgeous Bar Andaluz, where legend goes this cocktail was invented.  The Bar Andaluz, with its original frescoes decorating the bar, has not changed in years. Across the street you will find the interesting Centro Estatal de las Artes, with contemporary artwork by artists from around the state. Continue your walking tour of Ensenada crossing over the canal and  turning left to reach the sea. Before the malecon you will find the Centro Artesanal, the perfect place to find a souvenir. Enjoy the excellent climate of Ensenada as you stroll around the malecon. With any luck you will see sea lions sunbathing! Continue your walk until you get to the recreational and fishing boats. Would you like a boat tour around the bay? This is the place.

A stop on the way

Continue walking till you get to the FishMarket, the original fresh fish and seafood market of the city. Even if you are not about to buy anything, do peek around. You will find all kinds of clams, scallps, shrimp, fish… If you are hungry you are at the perfect location: the restaurants around the market offer award-winning fish tacos and exquisite soups you must taste. If you feel like partying, come out of the market and walk towards the coastal boulevard, then continue two blocks till the crossing of the Avenida Ruiz with Calle Primera (López Mateos). This corner, known as the R1, concentrates the bars and nightlife of the city. For an only-in-Ensenada type of experience go to Hussong’s, an old canteen that looks out of a western movie, where legend goes the first margarita was invented. There are many options around here to rest a bit, have a cocktail and have a bite.

French pastries, shopping and wines on Calle Primera

However, if you are hungry we suggest you wait a little bit. Go back downtown on Calle Primera and, four blocks down, you will find two seafood carts you must try on the crossing with Alvarado. Upstreet, La Gerrerense; towards the sea, El Güero. You must have the real seafood tostadas, it is absolutely mandatory!

Continue strolling on Calle Primera, a pleasant shopping boulevard now. Here you may find all sorts of crafts, silver, clothing… and you may also rest at a café. If you are here in the afternoon, we suggest you stop by El Rey Sol to try the most delicious French pastries. But we also recommend this place for Sunday breakfast. Don’t forget to stop by some of the gourmet shops around, with a great selection of bottles from the Wine Route of Baja California!
